Entrepreneurship flows through my veins! I knew I would be an entrepreneur since my freshman year in high school during Rep Your Future Day. As part of Spirit Week festivities, we were commissioned to wear attire that reflected our future profession. Of all things, I dressed as a businessperson! Back then, that meant looking like a dude, wearing a man’s suit and tie borrowed from my uncle’s closet, as there were fewer female entrepreneur role models back in the day. Coincidentally or not, it was also around that time, age 14, that I gave my life to Christ, the best decision of my life!
Thankfully, there are now over 252 million female entrepreneurs worldwide, which has grown by 114% in the last 20 years! It is now commonly referred to as the SheEconomy since globally, women entrepreneurs make up 43% of total businesses with more room to grow. Check out these statistics:
You see that…that’s $1.9 trillion up for grabs! [need to update this amount and the graphic; the statistics vary so greatly!] What are you waiting for? Young or old(er), it’s never too late, Sis. The Bible tells us in Psalm 92:14 that we will still produce fruit and flourish even in old age. Get in on a piece of the action!
Being an entrepreneur now comes in all shapes and sizes, so to speak, but I believe that in high school, Rep Your Future Day set my life in motion and on the entrepreneurial track. I was ‘gon be a boss lady, y’all!
Then life do what it do. Who I am and who I have become was driven by where I found myself at age 16 -- young and pregnant. As a result of my choices, teen motherhood became a part of my life’s story. I asked myself, how could someone smart enough to skip eighth grade be so naive and careless?
Obviously, becoming a teen mom was not my plan. While the “father” disappeared, the “Father[” did not. With the support of my mom, I gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby boy, who was three months old when I walked across the stage to receive my high school diploma.
Babies having babies!” so many people, including the “saints,” mockingly said to my face. I was told that my child and I would never amount to anything, that I would never go to college, and would be on welfare for the rest of my life. Can you believe that? If this is what the super saints said, can you imagine what the world was saying? It was already hard enough as it was without the naysayers. Little did they know their words of doubt and disbelief would motivate and inspire me to succeed. I had nothing to prove to others but EVERYTHING to prove to myself!
Out of high school and determined not to be on welfare, I worked several clerical and banking jobs. As a bank teller, I made $850 a month and brought home less than $600 monthly! Of that, almost half was going to quality daycare, a sacrifice I made to ensure my son was in a safe learning environment. In my role, I saw the paychecks of many professionals (i.e., doctors, lawyers, CEOs, etc.) and soon determined that my ticket out of poverty and to secure me and my son’s future was a college education.
With the support of my mother and the man I met at age 18, who would become my husband and father to my son, I went to college and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting, a master’s degree in Taxation, and became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA)! I had a successful 20+ year corporate career, working for an international accounting firm, Fortune 500 companies, nonprofit organizations, and small businesses.
Obtaining my bachelor’s degree in Accounting was one of the best days of my life! My graduation photo shows me crying like a baby as my degree was conferred. This piece of paper was simply a testament to hard work, perseverance, and God’s grace. I had defied the odds, silenced the naysayers, and secured my ticket out of poverty.
Business is my passion! I own a thriving CPA and consulting firm and look forward to crisscrossing the globe to teach biblicalpreneurship, inspire a new generation, and raise up biblicalpreneurs for the advancement of the Kingdom!
